AI | Can an AI generated film be considered as Art?

Happy Christmas to allπŸŽ„πŸŽ„πŸŽ„πŸŽ„πŸŽ„πŸŽ„
Having studied Philosophy for 55 years and spent 2022 doing an AI course at Imperial College, I have two points to make.

1.AI is not done by ‘coding’ so does not imply a human involvement. It is a computer creating something new by referencing maybe Thousands of films, via Machine Learning (ML), for all its ideas into something ‘apparently new’. The Machine Learning is on masses of stored data, sometimes guided by a little coding. So AI is not really human-like creativity at all. AI is mostly aimed at specific very narrow areas of human knowledge like board games, image processing, engineering, finance, supply chain management or specialist areas like medical diagnosis. This is ANI (Artificial Narrow Intelligence). Only a few humans (1%?) have the specialist skills and knowledge to do Narrow Intelligence in any one subject. But in growing areas will always be beaten by ANI

  1. Philosophically, any film made by people is creative. But very few will be brilliant, many more will be average and a large amount will be formulaeic cr*p but still have a little creativity. The brilliant ones will often contain new thinking ‘outside the box’

AI may get lucky and evolve something good but extremely unlikely. Most of its output for a film will be quirky, disjointed in many or all aspects and be considered as obvious & cr*p but with slick graphics (a specialist area it can learn). This would be AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) just like making a 1,000 piece jigsaw from bits of a million films? And hoping there is a clear picture on the box! Not likely!

Most humans (99%?) can do General Intelligence every day and AI cannot cope yet with good answers to absolutely any question other than being like a giant Google search which just regurgitates stuff.

So don’t get worried until we spend many more years ‘teaching’ AI to be much much better and have very strong ‘General Intelligence’ (AGI) that can ‘create’ Art rather than brilliant ‘Narrow Intelligence’ (ANI) that can already do very clever things beyond any human.

Only then would I philosophically say AI can really do Art
